Ilocos is a popular region to explore because city dwellers from Manila and other provinces in Luzon can easily get to it by driving on their own or taking public transport. Accessibility isn’t its only draw; it has historical and cultural attractions, delectable dishes famous all over the country, and beaches that have fair sand and clear blue waters.
If you’re visiting, consider Laoag your base. You’ll find plenty of things to do and places to explore from here. You can visit the UNESCO-listed Heritage Zone of Calle Crisologo in Vigan during your stay. The cobblestone streets, old shops and houses, ancestral homes, kalesas and delicious food make a trip worthwhile.
The La Paz Sand Dunes are a noteworthy destination for those hankering for adventure. Get on a dune buggy or 4×4 to drive up and down the dunes; this makes for an exciting adrenaline rush. After the ride, you can try sandboarding; it takes some practice and hilarious face plants to get the hang of. You can try this activity by either standing (like surfing) or sitting down.
Laoag also has historical attractions such as the Sinking Bell Tower. It dates all the way back to the 1600s and is literally sinking! Another relic of the past worth adding to your trip is the Santa Monica Parish Church; this has a history that spans centuries, dating to the 1770s. If you can’t get enough of old churches, the UNESCO-listed Paoay Church is another destination to visit.
Ilocos is popular not only because of its historical landmarks but also for its beautiful beaches. One of the most famous and visited is Blue Lagoon in Pagudpud. This stretch of fair sand earned its moniker because of how blue its waters are in the summer.
