Tuguegarao is a city on Luzon’s northeastern side and is a possible jump-off point to Palaui Island and other attractions in or just outside of Cagayan province. However, it can be more than just a place you pass through en route to somewhere else. As you explore, you can find old historical churches, caves, and delicious local food.

You can’t leave the city without trying the famous pancit batil patong. It is a delicious noodle dish that has tasty ingredients with a local twist that sets it apart from the other pancit in the country. One of the most popular attractions near Tuguegarao is the Callao Caves. The cracks and crevices above it have allowed light to seep in, illuminating the beautiful rock formations hidden beneath the ground. You can also find a makeshift church in one of the cave’s chambers.

Make sure to stop by Buntun Bridge when in Tuguegarao. This man-made wonder is more than 1300m long and is said to be the longest bridge over a river in the country. It cuts through beautiful rice fields and countryside, making for a picturesque drive. If you have more time to spare, you can go to Barangay Magdalo to go boating on the Pinacanauan River.

Like in many parts of the Philippines, you’ll see remnants of the Spaniards in the form of grand old churches — one of which is the Tuguegarao Cathedral. It is more than a century old and has undergone a number of repairs and reconstructions throughout its lifetime. You can also visit the Horno Ruins, an old Spanish-epoch kiln, as you explore the attractions in and just outside the city.

Give the city at least one night and a full day before returning to Manila, going to Palaui Island or elsewhere.
